Entomo, an insect house.
2024
Entomo is a modular refuge that attracts beneficial insects to the garden while playfully supporting human-nature connection. Designed with features developed for the needs of specific insects, Entomo utilizes ephemeral materiality for an engaging and safer approach to insect housing. Using cardboard encourages managing and replacing house structures to protect insects from threats like parasites, disease, and fungus. Mineral-coated cardboard allows Entomo to withstand various weather conditions, protecting insects for up to a year’s nesting cycle, inspiring users to continue to house different types of insects year after year.
The project seeks to contribute to insect conservation by building a sense of empathy and nourishment toward insects and their vitality to biodiversity.

Users can assemble and curate their houses to attract insects like pollinators and pest controllers and observe their progress to make gardens enticing for beneficial insects. Entomo uses shapes and patterns to allow for a limitless building experience and a clear discerning factor of the needs of each insect. Foraging allows users to learn more about their local ecosystem and create the interior of their refuge from found natural materials.
